The five lines make up the staff. Notice that the notes move alphabetically from low to high as you go up the C scale from line to space. Middle C is a lower note than can fit on the staff, so we add a ledger line.
The sylized G at the left of the staff is the treble clef or G clef. Notice how the second lowest line on the staff intersects the clef and forms a cross. The note on that line is G. Once you know one note on the staff, you can figure out the others by going up or down alphabetically. The musical alphabet goes from A to G. On the next page I'll show you an easier way to identify the notes on the staff.
